Young Artist Award

Diploma in Fine Arts alumnus Zhang Fuming was named a recipient of the 2024 Young Artist Award. Fuming is a Singapore-based artist whose practice revolves around printmaking, with an emphasis on traditional black-and-white woodblock prints. Deeply invested in the hands-on, physical process of relief wood-carving, his work uses the medium’s immediacy and precision to craft striking social commentaries through a realist lens.

The Young Artist Award, Singapore's highest honour for artists below the age of 35, is accorded to those who have shown promise of artistic excellence in the fields of literary arts, performing arts, visual arts and film. It encourages young practitioners to continue pursuing excellence in the arts, and to look towards inspiring others.

UOB Painting of the Year

LASALLE MA Fine Arts alumna Dana Lam received a Silver Award in the Established Artist Category at the 43rd UOB Painting of the Year. Her painting, The Look Back, spotlights the artist’s late dog, Samuel, who along with the artist, developed difficulties with their hips in their middle ages. Amid the daily trauma, a strange beauty and peace came through as Dana painted this artwork with gratitude for their lives.

Launched in 1982, the annual UOB Painting of the Year is the longest-running art competition in Singapore and one of the most recognised in Southeast Asia. Currently held in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, the competition continues to uncover the next generation of great Southeast Asian artists, and contribute to greater awareness and appreciation of art.
