Keeping the Dream by FX Harsono

Sat 19 Oct – Tue 12 Nov 2024

Earl Lu Gallery

Keeping the Dream delves into the intersection of identity, photography, and political surveillance. In the development of this new body of work, distinguished Indonesian artist FX Harsono draws on images of children from Chinese-Indonesian identity documents to expose how ethnic minorities were marginalised during Indonesia’s Suharto regime.

The exhibition unveils a harsh paradox: even children, innocent and unburdened by politics, were surveilled and controlled because of their ethnicity. The body of work reflects on how power can infiltrate personal spaces, turning even simple acts of documentation into political tools.

In addition to the historical photographs, Keeping the Dream engages young audiences by encouraging them to engage in exercises of image-making. By engaging them in drawing exercises which are subsequently displayed in the gallery, the exhibition reveals social, cultural, and political narratives from their perspectives.

At its core, Keeping the Dream is a plea for a world where one’s identity is not a mark to be controlled, but a story to be honoured. Through its sombre and piercing message, the work calls for the end of discriminatory practices that erode human dignity, reminding us that equality and compassion are the true measures of a just society.

This exhibition is part of the Singapore International Photography Festival 2024.

Matter Matters Vol. II

Sat 22 Feb – Sat 29 Mar 2025

Brother Joseph McNally Gallery

Matter Matters Vol. II invites you to step into a world where every material holds a story to be told—a continuation of the BA (Hons) Product Design programme’s quest to redefine the boundaries of craftsmanship and creativity.

This exhibition features Tapaestry and Make & Made—celebrating innovative approaches to design, process and storytelling.

At the heart of this journey, each project is a testament to innovation and imagination. Tapaestry weaves together tradition and experimentation, while Make & Made dives deep into the creative process, exposing the raw, unfiltered moments that lead to discovery. Together, they celebrate design as a narrative—one that bridges the past, present and future of how we view discarded materials.

It’s not just about objects, it’s about transformation. It’s about seeing the ordinary with fresh eyes and reimagining its potential. Through hands-on material studies, daring repurposing techniques, and moments of creative experimentation, students have explored the untold stories within materials, pushing them to their limits and beyond.

Let yourself be drawn into the stories. Let the textures, colours and forms spark curiosity. Let them remind you that even the most mundane materials hold extraordinary potential when shaped by human hands and limitless imagination.

Grounding the Future

Sat 5 Apr – Sat 12 Apr 2025

Earl Lu Gallery

How do we envision a future—a future that is just, sufficient and inclusive of all?

Grounding the Future emerges as a critical artistic exploration, probing the confluence of ecological consciousness, artistic expression and indigenous wisdom.

Through an array of mediums—fashion design, painting with natural pigments, and field research in Yogyakarta, Indonesia—the artists offer a rich and layered approach to envisioning a collective sustainable future that is firmly rooted in the present moment.

Curated by Dr Wang Ruobing, Grounding the Future is a work-in-progress presentation by the inaugural cohort of LASALLE's MA Arts and Ecology programme.

INTERLUDE: An MA Design work-in-progress showcase

Sat 26 Apr – Wed 30 Apr 2025

Brother Joseph McNally Gallery

INTERLUDE is a moment of reflection, a showcase of in-progress explorations by MA Design students who are pushing the boundaries of technology, systems design and social change.

It serves as a purposeful pause, a critical juncture that marks the space between research and resolution, where ideas form, shift and take shape. These prototypes represent the questioning, thinking and remaking phase—where possibilities remain open and design becomes a tool to reimagine what comes next.
